Working with Regional Center

When transitioning into the Self Determination Program, working with the Regional Center is key in facilitating enrollment in the program. The Regional Center has an important role in the Self Determination Program (SDP). With every enrollment, a SDP Individual Program Plan (IPP) is required when transitioning into self-determination program. It is the Regional Center service coordinator that helps with this Individual Program Plan. The Regional Center service coordinator remains part of the planning team and completes the SDP Individual Program Plan (IPP).

At IPP meetings, the Regional Center service coordinator should inform the participant and family about the SDP option and/or respond to a consumer’s request for information. Also, the Regional Center will require individual and family to attend a SDP Orientation. Individuals and families will need to request the recent Purchase of Services Statement. This statement assists on identifying the prior 12 months regional center service expenditures. And it helps with developing their budget for their spending plan. The person, the family, or the service coordinator can serve as Independent Facilitators or share IF providers or resource lists. The SD IPP process differs from program planning through traditional services. The IPP includes the selection of a Program Plan with goals and objectives, FMS, development of a budget, and development of a spending plan.

The person/participant and the Regional Center must agree on the goals and objectives in the IPP plan, the certified budget amount, and the spending plan.

Given the importance of the role of the service coordinator, working with the Regional Center is indispensable part of the enrollment process. It is important the individual and the support team clearly communicates in a timely fashion with the service coordinator to smoothly transition into the Self Determination Program.
